Mosaics are one of the original art forms, and pieces can be made to last for centuries. Choose from among several exciting projects, from beginner through expert, or bring your own unique project (with instructor approval). Sufficient tools, supplies and materials are included in the class fee to complete one beginner or intermediate project. $200(R)//$250(NR)

Mosaic Art - Beginner to Expert

Art League School Torpedo Factory Madison Street Annex, Community Room

Build a strong foundation in the ancient art form of mosaics using modern tools and materials. Learn to cut glass, properly adhere your tesserae, and finish your work for the best results. Planning, design, selection of materials, and use of hand tools will be covered. Fabrication techniques and tricks of the trade will be shared. Returning students may work on a project of their choice with instructor approval.  A materials fee of $95 is payable to the instructor by the first class. Tuition $255

Micro Mosaic Jewelry (18+)

Create beautiful modern or traditional style micro mosaic jewelry pieces using a variety of methods and materials.  Mediums include micro tiles in glass and ceramic, vintage rhinestones, abalone, millefiori, smalti, beads and more.

Fun With Mosaics - Garden Project (18+) 

Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods Location, Woodshop (small class size)

 

Explore the fun of working in Mosaics. This class will focus on the process of working with glass and tile to create a mosaic project. Each session will have a specific project and is designed for all skill levels. All supplies are included in the class fee.

Tools are available for use; however, participants must work independently on projects and bring their own materials. Registration for the month is available the month before, on the 25th for residents, and on the first of the month for nonresidents. First and third Sundays of every month with a few exceptions. $10(R)/$20(NR)* per visit.

Mosaic Furniture (in studio)

Mosaics are a beautiful way to resurface or embellish.  In this class there will be brief lectures and demonstrations of various tools and techniques used in the art of mosaic.  The course focus will be on completing a project such as a mirror, small table, or chair.  Projects need to be approved in advance by the instructor.  A general materials list will be provided, however specific materials for projects will be discussed on the first day of class.

Try Me! - Mosaic Art - Grout and Finish (in studio)

Grout and finish your project from Try Me! Mosaic Art Design and Build workshop or bring in your own mosaic project from home. Wearing a mask is required during this class because of the use of powders.

Tapestry Mosaics (18+)

Reston Community Center, Hunters Woods Location, Woodshop (small class size)

Tools are provided; however, participants Elaborate patchwork tapestry fabrics from Rajasthan and Gujarat, India are the inspiration for this class. Specialty glass (including Van Gogh glass and millefiori), crystal and beads are used to create multiple patterns of color and texture.

Create micro mosaic jewelry using a variety of materials including specialty glass including smalti, millefiori, filato. All levels are welcome. Materials fee of $50 due to the instructor. All skill levels are welcome.

Smalti and Stone Mosaic (studio workshop)

Art League School Torpedo Factory

Smalti has been used for hundreds of years to create beautiful artworks. The glass is thick and heavily pigmented, lending itself to rich, textural art. Currently produced in different parts of the world, variations will be discussed. Tools and cutting methods will be demonstrated. A direct method approach will be taken to create your own beautiful work.

Mosaic Flowerpot (studio workshop)

Art League School Torpedo Factory

Prepare a terracotta flowerpot for exterior display or leave natural for interior use. Lean tips and tricks to cover a cylindrical shaped vessel. Stained glass and vitreous tile will be provided as well as some ceramic pieces. It will be recommended to bring your finished terracotta pot indoors during colder weather to avoid freeze-thaw.

Mosaic Methods (18+)

Mosaics are fabricated using different methods, depending upon the application.  There are many considerations in choosing a method to create our mosaic art including environment and transporting your project. We will look at four categories and a total of seven popular methods of creating.  No glass cutting required.

Create a mosaic artwork for interior display using stained glass. Learn mosaic basics including glass cutting with nippers, and proper gluing technique. It is recommended to follow up with Try Me! Mosaic Art - Grout and Finish although this is not required. 


Layered Mosaic (studio workshop)

Art League School Torpedo Factory Madison Street Annex, Community Room

Create a beautiful landscape design or collage piece, layering glass including smalti, stone including polished gemstones, glass beads and more. In this workshop you will learn how to choose and combine appropriate adhesives and materials. Bring any findings, papers, jewelry pieces or pottery that you might wish to incorporate in your artwork.
